We came across an informative news article on a recent study about the effect of hypnosis on the brain.

We know that hypnosis can be used for overcoming anxiety and addiction. But how does this actually work within the brain?

Well, the results of the study show that hypnosis works by shutting off the part of the brain involved in daydreaming or letting the mind wander - also known as the "default mode" network. This leaves the brain free to concentrate on other tasks, such as to respond more effectively to suggestions. This shows that the changes were due to hypnosis and not just simple relaxation.

The entire news article is reproduced below:

Hypnosis has 'real' brain effect

Hypnosis has a "very real" effect that can be picked up on brain scans, say Hull University researchers.

An imaging study of hypnotised participants showed decreased activity in the parts of the brain linked with daydreaming or letting the mind wander.

The same brain patterns were absent in people who had the tests but who were not susceptible to being hypnotised.

One psychologist said the study backed the theory that hypnosis "primes" the brain to be open to suggestion.

Hypnosis is increasingly being used to help people stop smoking or lose weight and advisers recently recommended its use on the NHS to treat irritable bowel syndrome.

“ This shows that the changes were due to hypnosis and not just simple relaxation ”
Dr William McGeown, study leader.

It is not the first time researchers have tried to use imaging studies to monitor brain activity in people under hypnosis.

But the Hull team said these had been done while people had been asked to carry out tasks, so it was not clear whether the changes in the brain were due to the act of doing the task or an effect of hypnosis.

In the latest study, the team first tested how people responded to hypnosis and selected 10 individuals who were "highly suggestible" and seven people who did not really respond to the technique other than becoming more relaxed.

The participants were asked to do a task under hypnosis, such as listening to non-existent music, but unknown to them the brain activity was being monitored in the rest periods in between tasks, the team reported in the journal Consciousness and Cognition.

Default mode

In the "highly suggestible" group there was decreased activity in the part of the brain involved in daydreaming or letting the mind wander - also known as the "default mode" network.

One suggestion of how hypnosis works, supported by the results, is that shutting off this activity leaves the brain free to concentrate on other tasks.

Study leader Dr William McGeown, a lecturer in the department of psychology, said the results were unequivocal because they only occurred in the highly suggestible subjects.

"This shows that the changes were due to hypnosis and not just simple relaxation. "Our study shows hypnosis is real."

Dr Michael Heap, a clinical forensic psychologist based in Sheffield, said the experiment was unique in showing brain patterns supporting the theory that hypnosis works by "priming" the subject to respond more effectively to suggestions.

"Importantly the data confirm that relaxation is not a critical factor.

"The limited data from this experiment suggest that this pattern of activity then dissipates (at least to some extent) once the subjects start to engage in the suggestions that follow."

But he said the small study, which needed repeating in other populations, did not prove that people being hypnotised were in an actual "trance".

The following is a new article by the founder of Petra Hypnosis and Advanced Institute of Complementary Healthcare, Ms. Fauziah Shah, on tips for hypnotherapy professionals who are just starting out.

The Best Ten Ways to Be Business Smart
By Fauziah Shah

TIPS FOR BEGINNING HYPNOTHERAPY PROFESSIONALS
- THE 10 BEST!

1. Professionalism

It is very important to think and act as a professional. This would mean dressing to look professional too, especially when one is new in this line and needs to convince others to trust you. The place where we operate should also be visibly professional and should be designed to make people feel comfortable. Being a member of a professional group is also good.

2. Confidence

Being confident is very important, especially since most of the cases you work with are on self esteem issues. If you do not project confidence, how can you expect our clients to be confident in what you do? When my clients tell me " I hope my ....." I tell them, "Don't hope. Just believe. And if you want it so badly, you will get it". This is a great confidence booster.

3. Knowledge

No one can deny the importance of knowledge in our field. Although you've had the best training, there's always something new to learn. So actively seek knowledge in your field. Taking a refresher course is also useful. In fact, when you take advantage of repeat courses, your knowledge of the essential parts of the course can become clearer. Then there are many books you could read and you could gain much from being an active member of email groups that discuss hypnosis.

4. Practice

Also, there is little gain if one just keeps on reading and gaining more and more knowledge without practicing. When you actually do the work, not only do you learn more, your confidence also soars. You can always learn from your 'mistakes'. Remember, the more you practice, the better you become. And when you actually start practicing, more questions will arise and so will answers and you'll find yourself filling spaces of your hypnosis puzzle!

5. Interpersonal Skill

You will need to talk to a lot of people and learn how to interact with them. Sometimes how you say something will make a difference as to whether they want to be seen by you. This is applicable not only for face to face conversations but also for telephone conversations. Due to moods, sometimes even the well seasoned speaker may make a mistake or two and lose customers as a result, so don't beat yourself about this. Also the more 'slips' you make, the more you learn and the more the next client will benefit from your experience. So, just keep refining your speech as you continue practicing

6. Competence

Competence comes with lots of practice and knowledge. When we are competent, we get more clients who will even recommend others to us. Keeping in touch with all the latest techniques available polishing our skills all the time through practice makes us competent in what we do. To be competent is to be skillful.

7. Mailing List

Keep a mailing list of all those who have enquired about your services and send them regular emails by providing some interesting details. However it is important not to spam them and you should allow them to unsubscribe from the mailing list whenever they wish. And when they need to see a hypnotherapist, they'll think of you- someone who's available and easily accessible.

8. Advertisement

You may want to do some marketing of your services so that people out there know that you exist. Today the best way other than the yellow pages is to maintain a web presence. Also your satisfied clients will be your walking advertisements, so make your work client centered. And most importantly, they should be truthful and reflective of the true nature of your business.

9. Perseverance

Sometimes things may seem like an uphill task. These are the times when you need to be like the deaf frog that continued hopping up the hill despite taunts from the crowd and despite the fact that all the other frogs succumbed to the heat and the steep slope and gave up. The message is: Don't give up easily!

10. Contribution

The most important asset of a service provider is the contribution he or she makes to the community, either in individual services or in a group. It is alright to want to achieve financial goals, but you can also contribute to your community by volunteering to give free public talks to educate the masses about the benefits of doing hypnosis. This way, more people get to know about your profession, and of course at the end of the talk, you may distribute your name cards and brochures about your service.

Hypnosis teaches you how to take charge of your emotions
and not to let emotions rule you.

By Fauziah Shah

American psychologist and hypnotherapist Calvin Banyan, in his book ‘The Secret Language of Feelings’, has very succinctly elaborated about emotions and how they rule us most of the time. He points out that most of us walk about with lots of suppressed feelings and emotions. Along the way, sometimes we find avenues to release them but in many people, these are just waiting to ‘explode’.

Most human societies frown upon the so-called negative feelings such as anger, so people have been conditioned from young not to display such feelings. This leads to people having a backlog of anger or other negative emotions just waiting to be expressed. All experiences of suppressed anger accumulate and any new experience of a similar nature resonates with the older stored feelings causing people to ‘explode’. This inexplicable anger is what surprises many people.

People who have suppressed anger from young usually have problems with controlling anger in adulthood. However the strange fact is that people who suffer from such anger moods are either unaware of their condition or living in denial. Usually it is family members or well meaning friends who point this out to them. Even then many go through life not knowing how to overcome this problem. Some live in denial by publicly refusing to admit that there is anything to be bothered about and privately doing a mental battle all their lives.

As a 7th Path Self Hypnosis teacher, I conduct 7th Path self hypnosis classes regularly at my centre. I teach my students to understand that all feelings are good, including anger. Although 7th Path is an anti viral programme of the mind which works automatically upon contact with the Recognitions that are given out during the class, most students find that they start looking at things differently. Their perceptions change for the better and they become better able to manage their emotions.

Many adults who have anger issues are those who as children were not allowed to express their anger. Anger has always been seen as something that needs to be fixed, changed, stifled and discouraged. Many children were even punished for expressing anger or related emotions and many have grown up with feelings of inadequacy.

This is the mindset that needs to be changed. 7th Path Self Hypnosis is a mind-body-spirit approach to doing self hypnosis. Although 7th Path is not meant for healing, healing takes place and this is mainly due to the invitation of Delta or the student’s Higher Power to be a part of the process and also due to the clearing of emotional and mental baggage as a result of this practice. Many of my clients also opt to do 7th Path to complement the therapy that they’re doing with me. Many prefer one to one sessions with me while others join my group classes to benefit from the group energy.

7th Path is not a religion and people of all faiths can do this course together. The term ‘Path’ is just an acronym for ‘phase advanced transformational hypnotherapy’. Participants learn to accept the message that is delivered by their subconscious. They are taught to understand that all feelings are good, even anger which is a natural, healthy emotion which tells us that something is not fair and has to be set right. It is when people ignore such messages that over time, anger turns into frustration and eventually into depression.

There are times when it is appropriate to be angry. For example it is anger that has made possible the sprouting of democracies around the world and the emergence of independent states. As soon as people understand their emotions and how to manage them, they find it easier to handle internal stress which either becomes less potent or even non-existent. People who have unresolved issues can visit a hypnotherapist to do one-on-one private sessions or they may want to consider doing this through learning and practising the automatic process of 7th Path.

If you have any unresolved issues that need to be resolved and if you have problems with any kind of feeling or emotion, it is time to visit a certified hypnotherapist who is well versed with the secret language of feelings. BODY MIND SPIRIT FESTIVAL 2009
Fort Canning Centre

We are happy to announce that our Founder, leading hypnotherapist and master trainer, Fauziah Shah, will be giving at talk at the Body Mind Spirit Festival 2009 this Saturday (April 25, 3-4pm).

Title of Talk:
How Psychogenic Ailments are Caused by Negative Emotions & How You can Manage Your Emotions for Better Health

Brief Description of Talk:
Our thoughts affect how we feel and our feelings determine our actions and reactions. When we have positive feelings, we feel good not only mentally and emotionally but also physically. Our physical health is very much related to how we feel. Negative feelings create stress in the body, which in the long run creates disease in the body. All feelings are basically good as they are signals as to what is happening in the body, so if we understand how we feel and manage our feelings, we can prevent ourselves from illnesses that are psychogenic in nature.

Many conditions can be ‘treated’ using hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy can help people change their negative thought patterns and ideas. Thoughts and ideas are considered negative when they are unrealistic, upsetting, intrusive or irrational.

Such thoughts and ideas include:

 Continual thoughts that one is sick, despite medical reassurances
 Doubts of a spouse’s fidelity / faithfulness
 Constant imagination of the worst in any situation
 Inability to take constructive criticism
 Suspicious nature - always expecting the worst
 Lack of Self-confidence - always wondering if others are judgmental

Hypnotherapy is useful in removing fears and phobias, especially irrational ones. It could be fear of insects, animals, blood, needles, water, and anything else. Such fears and phobias could stem from childhood.

Hypnotherapy is also useful in helping people who are overly shy or nervous in overcoming their lack of self confidence.

And hypnotherapy is especially useful for helping people understand their emotions, and to be able to manage their negative emotions that adversely affect their normal functioning.

Examples of such emotions are:

 Anger
 Guilt
 Loneliness
 Sadness
 Jealousy
 Frustration
 Depression

Hypnotherapy is also good for helping people take charge of their lives and quit bad habits such as:

 Smoking
 Nail-biting
 Shop-lifting
 Drinking
 Hair pulling
 Stuttering
 Coughing
 Compulsive eating
 Other compulsive behaviors

The best part of using hypnosis is that it is drug-free and has no adverse side-effects.

It was only some years ago that hypnosis and hypnotherapy began to become enter into the mainstream consciousness. This was fuelled by the media popularization of self-help books on self-hypnosis and DVDs such as The Secret. Nowadays hypnosis is a hip word; almost everyone in every field has heard about it and many have even come out to testify as to how using hypnosis has helped them make the necessary changes that they so want.

So it was no surprise when Ben Affleck (a popular American actor) said on Oprah recently that he had managed to successsfully quit smoking through hypnotherapy. Affleck told viewers that he had been smoking for over 20 years (almost all of his adult life) - he kept telling himself that he would quit someday, but he just never got around to it. Finally, he decided to make a commitment to quit after the birth of his child. He engaged a professional hypnotherapist to help him do it. Today, he is a non-smoker, and he has declared he'll stay that way!

Many CEO’s, pro athletes and successful people use hypnosis. Hypnosis is simply accessing the subconscious part of your mind. What people find intriguing is that this happens naturally everyday without people realizing it. It happens just before we fall asleep, just before we awaken, when we day dream, when we’re watching T.V. or playing computer games and when we’reengrossed in an activity. And better yet, it costs nothing, is easy to do and can be utilized immediately.

The subconscious mind is similar to intuition, gut feeling or even conscience. It is where all memory, creativity, morality, ethics and guidance lie. It determines our habits and beliefs. You can easily learn how you can harness this ability to help you make changes in your life. And if you suffer from psychological challenges stemming from your past, you can easily get them resolved by visiting an experienced and trained hypnotherapist.

Today's blog article provides you with tips to help get you started on the path to quitting smoking.

1) Make the commitment. Say it aloud, and write down your goal, then paste in up in a place you will be bound to see. This will serve as a constant reminder.

2) Set a target goal date - this is when you aim to stop smoking completely.

3) Set quiet time for yourself daily. You will need to find a spot where you can easily relax.

4) When you are in your quiet spot, you should close your eyes and concentrate on breathing. Once your breathing becomes steady and you are relaxed, you are in a state to receive positive suggestions. This state would feel like when you are daydreaming or in deep focus.

5) Now, you should repeat your goal to yourself. Also, visualize your goal - that is, you have stopped smoking and have no need for it anymore. By Visualizing and repeating the positive statements during your quiet period, you are reinforcing them.

Quitting smoking is a very difficult process, as any smoker will tell you. A person may stop smoking for a short duration, then feel compelled to smoke again when the craving kicks in. Mood swings, lethargy and intense cravings can be obstacles to overcome; but these are physiological reactions to the nicotine withdrawal.

The mind is stronger than we think. It is possible to quit smoking through hypnosis - in fact, I believe no other method can truly work as well and be sustainable over the long run as hypnosis can!

With the tips above, you are off to a great start. Please note that one major problem for most people trying to quit is how to get into a relaxed mode in order to accept the positive suggestions. This is where professional hypnotherapists can help. With a professional's help you are brought into a relaxed state very easily, and positive suggestions will stop the cravings for cigarettes, even when you are out of hypnosis. Another added benefit, is that when you actually pay for professional help, you are also demonstrating your commitment to yourself - you are making a change NOW.

Remember always, whichever method you choose on your path to quit smoking - the most important thing is your commitment level. You must want to quit, and act accordingly to do so.

Hypnosis is definitely not a new age phenomena. Way back during the Ancient Greece and Egypt periods, there were such things as ‘sleep temples’ - places of pilgrimage and healing where hypnosis was practised. And during the Middle Ages, healing was done through touch and prayer; this was done while the people were in a hypnotic state.

Did you Know that...

‘Mesmerize’ is an English word which means ‘to fascinate’. Now it is also used to mean ‘to hypnotise’ because ‘mesmerism’ is now equated with hypnosis. However, when the word first came to be used, it was not associated with hypnotism although that was exactly what it meant. The word ‘hypnosis’ was invented much later. The word ‘mesmerism’ originated from a man named Anton Mesmer who practised hypnosis in the 1700’s (18th century). This was when the theory of magnetism was developed. Franz Anton Mesmer discovered that he could induce people into a trance-like state. It was only in the 19th century that James Braid coined the term ‘hypnosis’ for the induction of a trance-like state through simple suggestion. He was the one who re-examined Mesmerism and reached similar conclusions as Anton Mesmer.

In the early part of the 20th century, hypnosis was used almost exclusively by stage hypnotists, thereby projecting a hopelessly distorted view of the very powerful therapeutic tool. This was when misconceptions and distorted views about hypnosis became rampant, causing many professionals to disassociate themselves from this powerful tool.

However, in 1952, the British government passed the Hypnotism Act as it recognised hypnosis as a viable therapeutic tool, but it was only in 1955 that the British Medical Association decided to endorse the practice of hypnosis in medical school education. The American Medical Association also recognized hypnosis as a healing modality. And in 1958, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) also approved hypnotherapy for use by professionally responsible individuals.

Despite this, many medical schools did not include hypnosis in their curriculum, leading to many doctors passing through medical school without the knowledge to utilise hypnosis in their work.

Meanwhile the field of hypnotherapy was growing and many individuals became professional hypnotherapists and were able to help the vast majority of people whose problems could not be solved by conventional medical science.

Hypnotherapists who belong to accredited organisations like the NGH (National Guild of Hypnotists) are required to follow the code of Ethics prescribed by it and have to renew their membership annually by meeting certain criteria set by the Guild. Any client who has medical symptoms like pain is always asked to provide a doctor’s referral before he or she is seen by a hypnotherapist. In this way, professional hypnotherapists work hand in hand with the health care professionals.

What is Hypnosis?

Posted by Fauziah Shah | 9:58 PM

‘Hypnosis’ is a word that usually gets people both fascinated and interested or utterly suspicious and cautious or even defensive. As can be seen, these people are at extreme ends of the pole.

Why does the word ‘hypnosis’ attract such diverse opinions?

The main reason is because many people know nothing about the true nature of hypnosis and to their minds, it is surrounded by mystery and intrigue. So, they respond according to what resides in their subconscious minds.

Even the experts are unable to tell us what hypnosis really is. They know what it is like to be in hypnosis and they know what benefits can accrue because of hypnosis, but they cannot really say what it actually is.

The best way is to say what hypnosis is not and then discover what hypnosis is!

What most experts agree on is that hypnosis is a state of the mind that is relaxed enough to be suggestible so that changes can take place in the subconscious mind.

This is because the subconscious mind is non-selective and non-critical so it is receptive to the subtle power of suggestions.

In a nutshell, we can say that hypnosis is an altered state of heightened suggestibility.

Meet the Founder of AICH, Fauziah Shah

Posted by AICH Manager | 12:33 PM

Fauziah is Passionate in What She Does

Fauziah believes in the body’s natural ability to heal itself. She believes that this coupled with divine power that an individual has access to can aid many people move towards wellness and health. She believes that whatever healing modality is used should take into account this crucial factor. And this is the main reason why she has pursued the profession of hypnotism and related healing arts.

Close to a thousand people, children as well as adults, have benefited from her passion in this field. Realizing that there are many people out there who needed help, and not enough hypnotherapists to go round, she became a Hypnosis Trainer and started training only the more serious, qualified and mature individuals to become Certified Hypnotherapists while maintaining a private practice. She has kept her training classes small and attract only those who’re meant to do this work.

Fauziah's Educational and Professional Background

She graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelors degree in English and History with a minor in Political Science in 1987. She then graduated from the same university with a Masters degree in English studies in 1991. Her research focused on the language acquisition of children and how to help children progress in their linguistic skills despite their learning disabilities.

Before she became a hypnotherapist, she had been a school teacher with the Ministry of Education, Singapore. Having the potential to do more for society in a private capacity, she resigned from mainstream teaching and set up a private language school called Petra Education Centre in 1997. The school was registered with the Ministry of Education, Singapore and was also accredited by Case Trust. Now the school has been made into a private limited company and registered with the Centre for Private Education in Singapore under the new education guidelines. The school’s curriculum caters to the needs of local as well as foreign students. She also created and developed a Phonics program to help students read, write and spell effectively, called Petra Phonics. For many years she ran a reading, writing and spelling clinic for children. Today Fauziah is popularly sought by parents for specialised English language training.

What got Fauziah into Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy

Having dealt with the academic achievement of students, both children and adults for many years, she realized the importance of mental and emotional stability and well being. She found that students who are emotionally stable perform better than those saddled with emotional challenges. That was when she started looking for ways to enhance her ability to help the students not only academically but also mentally and emotionally. That began her journey into the field of hypnotism at the turn of the century.

Fauziah was Trained by the Best in the Field

She is grateful to Cal Banyan who was her first formal instructor in hypnotism. Now she represents Cal in Singapore by teaching his brand of hypnotism the 5 PATH & 7th Path way. She appreciates Cal for his many contributions to the field of hypnotherapy. After her initial and thorough training (she did it three times with Cal), she then received numerous other training from other well known trainers: Dr. George Bien, Dr. Michael Robertson, Paul Rushton, Dr. Ashok Jain, Richard Harte, Mickey Mongan, Maggie Phillips, Bert Hellinger, Richard Gordon, Stephen MacCarthy, Michael Gerber, Ron Eslinger, Roy Hunter, Peter Mabbut.....This list is not exhaustive.

Fauziah Believes in Increasing the Tools in her Toolbox

Fauziah is trained not only in 5 PATH & 7th Path; she is also trained in General Hypnotherapy, Clinical Hypnotherapy, Counseling, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, HypnoBirthing, Systemic and Family Constellations, Trauma and Somatic Healing, Energy Psychology, Reiki, Quantum Touch, Advanced Theta Healing DNA, Security and Risk Management and many others. What she constantly does is to integrate all that she has learnt into a meaningful and effective system that works all the time.

She takes all that is good in what she has learnt, modifies them and then uses them in her sessions with her clients. She uses 5 PATH & 7th Path in many cases. 7th Path® is a mind, body, spirit form of self-hypnosis that has been specially designed to complement 5 PATH® hypnotherapy. She also uses NGH and IACT/IMDHA techniques which are needed in many cases too.

Fauziah believes in Lifelong Learning

Fauziah believes in lifelong learning. Despite her vast knowledge and expertise, Fauziah believes in continually upgrading herself and encourages those who work with her to do the same. Fauziah also updates herself with the latest knowledge about hypnotherapy and complementary modalities by being members of various organizations like the National Guild of Hypnotists, the 5 PATH International Association of Professional Hypnotherapists, the International Association of Counselors and Therapists, the International Medical and Dental Hypnotherapy Association, the HypnoBirthing Institute and the International Hypnosis Research Institute.

AICH- Leader in Complementary Healthcare!

After seeing clients out of language centre for a couple of years, we registered our business with ACRA as Petra Hypnosis & Training Centre at Pandan Valley. Subsequently this was renamed Petra Hypnosis & Training Centre Pte Ltd. More than a year ago, we registered a new business name with ACRA, Advanced Institute of Complementary Healthcare at No. 10 Marshall Road. Recently we moved institute to our new address at 203-A Goldhill Centre, Thomson Road and we then privatized our business. So now our business name is Advanced Institute of Complementary Healthcare (AICH) Pte Ltd or in short AICH Pte Ltd. This is to take our practice to the next level and to incorporate other healing modalities under one roof. Not only are other therapists able to work together with me now but clients who see us can also benefit from this partnership. So we have Monisha Assudani, Ian Pang, Richard Tan, Shuli Law, Simon Lee and a few others working out from our centre.

We at AICH work as a team of professionals. We work with people using waking hypnosis by reframing our client’s issues and counseling them. And when we need to collapse challenges and remove blockages stemming from programming from the past, we believe doing hypnotherapy is the best option. We can then directly access the subconscious mind to effect the necessary changes at this level. We use 5 PATH and 7th Path Hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy is indeed a safe, effective and practical way to work with the mind. When necessary, we use other healing modalities as well such as EFT and energy healing.

Fauziah and the Other Therapists at PETRA and AICH use an Integrative Approach

Almost everyone in every walk of life can benefit from doing hypnosis and hypnotherapy with us and also other therapeutic modalities that we offer at our centre. We have worked with a number of challenges like fear of public speaking, fear of heights, other irrational fears, bad habits like smoking or nail biting, relationship issues, confidence and self esteem issues, concentration and focusing challenges, pain management, sleeping challenges, and many more. We have coached people to reframe their thought patterns, to manage their emotions, to relieve stress and to create abundance in their lives. There is no end to the possibilities available in the use of hypnosis and other healing modalities for well being.

Close to a thousand people have benefited from doing hypnotherapy/ healing with us.

We help you SUCCEED!
